Wanzhou

Sometimes, distanced and overwhelmed by urban dwelling, as consolation I set about trying to forget the river town: the sound of the water, the height of the hills, the conversations after the lights went out. I never managed it.

Hangzhou

I lived on, with, and for Wen’er Rd. A street lined up with small diners, groceries, bookstores and college campuses, it was my library and playground. The bus 10# used to stop at my junior high in the east, high school in the south, and university in the far west, in half an hour and in 10 years.

Cambridge

I go to school in Boston. That's what I tell people. But really, Cambridge is where life unfolds. Langdell, Widener and Lamont. Bertucci's, Burdick and Finale. Child 316. Piper. Knowing for certain that there will be a reunion is perhaps the best leave ever.

Delft

Biking along the canals, picking flowers in the field, hanging around in the antique market...this lowland summer, the sun lingers on .

Prague

Walking from Staré Město to Dejvická in the heavy fog sounds like a bad idea. We had this walk on Dec. 31, 2009, away from the crowds and fireworks, through the whispering alleyways and silent bridges, back to the grayish 1920s blocks that were to us campus, transit hub, and home.

Shanghai

First it was the gated high-rise community in Minhang, and a fifty-minute commute on Metro 1; Then it was Linong hostel in Huangpu and a twenty-minute ride on Metro 10. Last, the student apartment of TJU and walking for ten minutes in the sycamore shades. We grew closer fast, but I’m finding my way back slowly.
